Arthas Menethil, former Crown Prince of Lordaeron and Knight of the Silver Hand, is the Lich King and head of state of the Imperium of Northrend. The son of King Terenas II and Queen Lianne Menethil, Arthas was the heir to the throne of Lordaeron. He was trained as a paladin by Uther the Lightbringer and became romantically linked with the sorceress Jaina Proudmoore, his childhood friend. Despite his beginnings as a Paladin and firm believer in the light, Arthas transformed into one of the most powerful and feared beings that Azeroth had ever seen during the Third War.

The son of King Terenas II and Queen Lianne Menethil, Arthas was the heir to the throne of Lordaeron. He was trained as a paladin by Uther the Lightbringer and became romantically linked with the sorceress Jaina Proudmoore, his childhood friend. Despite his beginnings as a Paladin and firm believer in the light, Arthas transformed into one of the most powerful and feared beings that Azeroth had ever seen during the Third War. His desperate quest to save his people led him to Northrend, where he took up the runeblade Frostmourne and became a death knight, leading the Scourge in destroying Lordaeron and merged with the Lich King. Although the dominant personality of the Lich King, Arthas' actions during the Scourge's invasion of Azeroth were influenced by Ner'zhul. After the Siege of Icecrown and Arthas' fall, he was separated from the Helm of Domination, freeing him from any control by Ner'zhul. He fled to Outland in order to regain his strength along with Lairion Bloodborne, his best friend and trusted Lieutenant. After reforging Frostmourne, Arthas personally slew Deathwing and set himself on a path to reform the Scourge's strength to fight the inevitable invasion of Azeroth by the Burning Legion.
