Little is known of Johann Schmidt's early life or how he even formed Hydra. except for some rumors spread through Hydra soldiers and later discovered by American military. These rumors were that he cut off his own skin to look the way he does, he mutated and that he has a prototype Super Soldier Serum laced in his body.World War II
During World War II, he would frequently encounter the legendary war heroCaptain America. The two would constantly battle usually ending with the Captain ruining his Hydra operations.
Sometime in 1945, Red Skull developed a protoype A-Bomb created from Celestial technology left over by them millions of years prior. Captain America and the Howling Commandos would learn of this and launch an attack on his base. Red Skull would launch the bomb which was attached to a rocket although he was defeated by Captain America and he jumped on the rocket to stop it. While mortally wounded, a soldier named James "Logan" Howlett would approach Red Skull and kill him with his bone claws seeing as Red Skull was too dangerous to be left alive.

| - Super Soldier Serum Enhancements: Johann Schmidt took an unfinished prototype of the Super Soldier Serum that caused the severe and hideous transformation of Schmidt's appearance into a living Red Skull, but also obtained incredible attributes, such as enormous strength, speed, stamina and reflexes, and got even his intelligence increased, becoming a war mastermind.
*Enhanced Strength: The Red Skull's physical strength can match Steve to the very peak of human potential.
*Enhanced Mobility: The Red Skull is able to run at a speed of approximately 30 miles per hour. The Red Skull have agility superior to that of any Olympic athlete. Schmidt's reflexes are similarly enhanced and are superior to those of the finest athlete.
*Enhanced Endurance: His bones and muscles are denser and harder than normal, to the highest human potential, which makes him very durable compared to a normal human. Schmidt's musculature produces less fatigue toxins during physical activity than the musculature of an ordinary human.
