A bottomless pit is death hazard that appears in all side-scrolling Mega Man games. If any playable characters falls into one, they will lose a life. Pits often have enemies that either rise from them or fall from above that try to knock the player in, so pits often need to be approached carefully before jumping over them. In some Mega Man games, there are certain items that will carry the player out of a pit for a short time if they happen to fall into one. For example, purchasing Beat in some games from the original Mega Man series or using a bird Cyber-elf in the Mega Man Zero series will save the player from a bottomless pit once when used.

  • The Bottomless Pit is the 63rd Discovery that Vyse can make.
  • The bottomless pit, also known as the abyss, was the place where Satan was sent into, chained and bound and locked up, during the Millennial Kingdom period in the Left Behind books, where he would deceive the nations no more until that time period had ended. It was also where the locust creatures that inflicted the nonbelievers with painful tormenting stings came from at the time of the fifth Trumpet Judgment in "Apollyon".
  • Pits are first seen in Super Mario Bros., including the very first level, and appear in every one of the game's sequels and remakes. Mario can simply jump over the pits in order to avoid them. However, some pits require Mario to build speed in order to jump over them. In rarer cases, Mario must jump over a bunch of enemies in order to cross a very wide pit.
  • The Bottomless Pit is a common device found in fiction and folklore - an imaginary chasm that goes on (seemingly) forever: it can also be used in a loose term for any extremely deep chasm whether man-made or natural. A great many villains in fiction and folklore utilize Bottomless Pits as Death-Traps and many villains also fall into seemingly Bottomless Pits when they are defeated (this is a staple of most classic Disney villains).

A Bottomless Pit may also symbolize the spiritual curse of Damnation - especially if the pit has flames or demonic imagery within it, for example the legendary Lake of Fire talked of in the Bible is theoretically a "bottomless pit" as it would contain all the evil spirits, fallen angels and unrepentive criminals of this world (and perhaps many more).
