The practice of buying and selling indulgences was a big money-maker for the Catholic Church, which would absolve any sin without shame if you could pay the price. Here, it probably also refers to indulging in drugs ("I'm down to pay for it").

  • Indulgences, under the doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church, are specific recommended prayers or actions which are intended to help bring a person, dead or alive, closer to perfection. A result of this is the lessening of the burning need to bring that person to a perfect state, necessary to enter Heaven. A person may seek an indulgence for a loved one who has passed away or for the temporal punishment of oneself. A plenary indulgence may be obtained for the living or the dead, known or unknown. While Sacramental Confession is needed for the forgiveness of sins, indulgences bring the sinner closer to perfection in his very person, thus reducing time spent in the state known as Purgatory. An indulgence cannot be seen as a replacement for confession, for obvious reasons.

Text
  • Wonder who the High Sparrow was before he was a sparrow.
  • Be skeptical about the High Sparrow's self-proclaimed humility.
  • The High Sparrow looks at Septa Eleanor. "How kind, Septa, to bring us such indulgences. A warm cloak and shoes for the needy." He waits expectantly.
  • Ask the High Sparrow whether he is condemning you for staying warm and dry.
  • Grudgingly give over your cloak and shoes to the needy.
  • Ask the High Sparrow what he's doing in King's Landing.
  • "No one of importance, Septa," the High Sparrow says graciously. "I am no Septon, only the humblest and least exalted of all the gods' creatures."
  • Approve of the High Sparrow's dedication to the suffering.
  • The High Sparrow raises a brow. "I am doing the work of the Seven, Septa, just like you. I feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick..."
  • "We who have given our lives to the gods can shelter in Their warmth," the High Sparrow says. "These people have only the world of flesh."

An indulgence cannot be seen as a replacement for confession, for obvious reasons. Until the 1567 Council of Trent, indulgences could be bought for specific periods of time. However, when these old-form indulgences used time-based terms, they didn't mean "x number of days off Purgatory." The time-based term meant that the indulgence remitted the same amount of temporal punishment as would that much time spent in penance on earth. Thus, an indulgence of 300 days meant it remitted the temporal punishment that 300 days of penance would. In the Middle Ages, indulgences were frequently sold. The attack by Martin Luther on the sale of indulgences began the Reformation.
