Walter Skinner was infested by this, and Alex Krycek was able to inflict a great amount of pain to him. The exact origins of the nanovirus are unknown, but Krycek was able to command them using a type of touch-pad remote control he manipulated as necessary. Apparently there were levels of this virus and Skinner actually died briefly but Krycek reduced the level of intensity of the virus and Skinner come back to life. Krycek used this to threaten Skinner.S.R. 819

  • A nanovirus, also known as a nanokiller, was a selective virus designed to kill only an individual or specific groups of people that it had been developed to, without harming other undesired individuals.
  • In 2376, Axum and other Borg drones in Unimatrix Zero designed a nanovirus that would mask their mutation, preventing the Collective from detecting and destroying them. As they were unable to act outside of Unimatriz Zero, Axum appealed to Seven of Nine and the USS Voyager for help.

Aboard Voyager, The Doctor modified the nanovirus to nullify the drones' cortical inhibitors, so that they will retain their memories and individuality outside of Unimatrix Zero and thus potentially resist the Borg from within. Captain Kathryn Janeway developed a plan wherein herself, Tuvok, and B'Elanna Torres would allow themselves to be assimilated, giving them access to the central plexus of a Borg tactical cube. Through the plexus, the nanovirus would be disseminated throughout the Collective instantly. Torres succeeded in downloading the nanovirus into the central plexus, though the Borg Queen overwhelmed Tuvok's neural suppressant and learned of the nanovirus herself. She modified it to fatally degrade the autonomic nervous systems of the mutated drones, intending to distribute it through Unimatrix Zero. Before it could be deployed, Janeway ordered Voyager to destroy Unimatrix Zero by disrupting its neural interlink frequency. (VOY: "Unimatrix Zero", "Unimatrix Zero, Part II")
  • A nanovirus, also known as a nanokiller, was a selective virus designed to kill only an individual or specific groups of people that it had been developed to, without harming other undesired individuals. Nanoviruses targeting specific beings or groups of beings were notoriously difficult to produce due to the need of identifying an entire genome, or else the virus would not attack the target. Routine natural mutation, interbreeding, and genetic engineering would make an individual immune to the virus's effects. This weakness could be skirted by having the virus target a specific, unchanging gene sequence that would make its target or targets stand out from the larger population such as the one used to increase the rate of aging within clone troopers. More dangerously, a nanovirus could be keyed less specifically in order to kill subjects of an entire race, such as humans, indiscriminately.
