He was the sixth son of Peter Poland, a furrier, and Sarah Selina née Jackson. He was born in the parish of St Clement Danes in central London and educated at St Paul's School and the Inner Temple. He was called to the bar in 1851. In 1888 he "took silk" and became a Queen's Counsellor. He retired in 1895, when he was knighted. He died at his Chelsea home, aged 98.
