About: Magnetic Ion Acceleration Engine   Sponge Permalink

An Entity of Type : owl:Thing, within Data Space : dbkwik.org associated with source dataset(s)

The Magnetic Ion Acceleration coil (also known as the MIA engine) is the main method of interplanetary propulsion used by the vessels of the SWC. Ships usually hold 2 to 4 of these coils, either housed within the body of the ship or in retractable engine pods. The reaction creates pure energy and super energized protons which are directed and shot out the back of the engines, pushing the ship forward with very low mass propellent. Though the speed of that propellant (several million meters per second) results in a very effective thrust.

  • The Magnetic Ion Acceleration coil (also known as the MIA engine) is the main method of interplanetary propulsion used by the vessels of the SWC. Ships usually hold 2 to 4 of these coils, either housed within the body of the ship or in retractable engine pods. The coils are effectively massively powerful electromagnets. At the front of the MIA engines are specialized array that detect hydrogen gas in the near void of space. These arrays then selectively ionize the hydrogen atoms using precision lasers to create H+, also known as protons. These protons are then caught in the MIA’s magnetic field and are attracted towards the ship. When a sufficient amount of hydrogen is redirected towards the ship, the lasers cease the ionization process. As the protons are funneled into the coils their density increases, (sometimes drastically depending on the initial concentrations of hydrogen and the power put into the magnetic field). Trace amounts of antiprotons are introduced into the central chamber, and react with the speeding protons. The reaction creates pure energy and super energized protons which are directed and shot out the back of the engines, pushing the ship forward with very low mass propellent. Though the speed of that propellant (several million meters per second) results in a very effective thrust. For safe flights (near planets or other ships, where clouds of speeding ions could become a danger), or in regions where hydrogen concentrations are too low, the ship will use protons that it holds on board within several storage tanks. Though not as effective as magnetically accelerated particles, they do yield a sufficient thrust for delicate situations.
