| - In the ancient past, around the time of early homo erectus hunter-gatherers, an advanced alien spacecraft lands on Earth. On board the spacecraft are technologically advanced aliens, carrying with them canisters containing blue, glowing energy. The aliens have captured several animals, who they expose to the energy. The aliens’ leader, Ruul, oversees the process. Roll title & credits (with this playing) In the midst of the Vietnam War, the year 1970, young soldiers Timothy Dugan is walking through the jungle with his troop. He spots a strange metallic object in the distance, and sneaks off to get a closer look. He discovers it is the wreckage of an alien spacecraft, and takes a look at its engine. He kicks the engine, accidentally causing it to explode, giving away the troop’s cover. The troop falls under heavy fire, and soldier Joseph Danvers runs over to Timothy, saving his life. Years later, Timothy and Joseph, having survived the attack and returned to America after the war, are now good friends, though Timothy’s display of stupidity back in Vietnam earned him the nickname “Dum Dum” from Joseph. In the year 1990, Joseph has started a family, living in Washington with his wife, son, and daughter. Joseph now works in the air force, and one day he takes his daughter with him to see some military fighter jets. Joseph is approached by Timothy, who he hasn’t seen in years. Timothy and Joseph later arrive at the SHIELD Triskelion, where Rick Stoner, the Director of SHIELD, tells Joseph that his impressive work in both the air force and the military has gotten SHIELD’s attention. Joseph is recruited as an agent of SHIELD, once again working with his best friend Timothy. In modern day, Joseph has been declared dead, having disappeared on his first field mission for SHIELD. At an Air Force base in Nevada, Dum Dum Dugan looks over a series of covert military aircrafts created using secret Stark Industries technology. Dugan talks to engineer Sharon Ventura, and tells her that Tony Stark couldn’t make it, on account of superhero business. Pilot Carol Danvers suits up, and approaches the two. Dugan tells Carol that her father would be proud. Sharon wishes Carol good luck on the test flight. Carol gets into one of the jets, and takes off into the air. As she flies upward, she looks up to the bright sky, and closes her eyes, taking in the experience. Outside the Earth’s atmosphere, a single spacecraft soars through the solar system, piloted by two Kree aliens and carrying a highly dangerous celestial artifact known as the Cosmic Cube. The craft is hit by an asteroid, and spirals out of control. They send out a distress signal to the Kree Empire, just before their ship falls to the nearest planet: Earth. As Carol is soaring through the air, Sharon tells her she needs to make an emergency landing. Carol asks what for. Back at the base, Sharon and Dugan are looking at a radar, which shows that an unknown object is heading right for Carol. Before Sharon can say anything, the Kree spacecraft crashes into Carol’s jet. Carol miraculously survives the accident, but is seriously injured. She crawls out from under the wrecked jet, and sees the hatch on the spacecraft open. A hand reaches out, but then falls back down. Carol crawls over to the hatch, and climbs up to look inside the spacecraft. She sees the two Kree pilots. She reaches into the help them, but the Cosmic Cube releases a burst of cosmic energy. Carol is blown away by the blast, and knocked unconscious. The two Kree were too close to the blast, and thus disintegrated. At the base, Sharon attempts to contact Carol, but gets only white noise. Three months later, Carol awakens in a hospital room. She gets up, and is barely able to walk. She falls down, but manages to pull herself back up. As Carol makes her way to the door, someone else opens it from the outside, and steps into the room. The woman introduces herself as Abigail Brand, the Director of SWORD. Abigail brings Carol out into the command center, where several scientists and SWORD members are busy at work. Carol asks where on Earth she is, and Abigail tells her she isn’t on Earth anymore. It is revealed that Carol is on the Peak, the orbital headquarters of the Sentient World Observation and Response Department, or SWORD. Abigail tells Carol that scientists analyzed the spacecraft she collided with, and found it was unlike any known Earth technology. Carol tells Abigail that their were two pilots on the craft, but they definitely weren’t human. Abigail brings Carol over to the Cosmic Cube, which is being contained in a large glass case as scientists study it. Abigail tells Carol that the Cube seems to be some sort of cosmic energy source, and that the accident in some way upset it, causing it to release a large amount of energy, which affected Carol in ways SWORD is still unsure of. Carol starts to panic, when Dum Dum Dugan comes up to comfort her. Dugan explains to Carol that SWORD is a subsidiary of SHIELD, the government organization he works for. Dugan tells Carol how he found the Kree engine in Vietnam, and that when he joined SHIELD, he and Howard Stark were the ones who mainly encouraged the former Director of SHIELD, Rick Stoner, to form SWORD, a secret organization to study extraterrestrial activity. Dugan believes that the spacecraft that crashed into Carol is related to the craft he found in Vietnam, based on the similar appearance of the two. Just outside Earth’s solar system, a large Kree mothership approaches the Earth. On board, Kree soldier Mar-Vell talks with Ronan the Accuser, a Kree governor. Mar-Vell tries to convince Ronan that whatever happened with the Cosmic Cube’s handlers must have been an accident, but Ronan tells Mar-Vell that they can’t take any risks, as the Cosmic Cube is far too dangerous. Ronan reveals to Mar-Vell that they are tracking the Cube through the cosmic radiation it gives off. On the Peak, Carol is sitting in her hospital room. She puts out her hand, and watches as a spark of radiant energy bursts from her palm. Carol is amazed, and puts out her arm. She concentrates, and fires an energy blast out from her hand that blows through the wall. In the control room, Abigail Brand walks over to SWORD member Monica Rambeau, who shows her a radar. The radar reveals a large UFO approaching them. Abigail looks up through the window and sees the spacecraft off in the distance. On board the mothership, Mar-Vell enters a dark room, where several Kree, including Ronan, are gathered around a large cylindrical monitor in the center of the room. There is a bright flash as a Kree-like figure appears on the monitor. This figure is the Supreme Intelligence, the AI that commands the Kree Empire. Ronan tells the Supreme Intelligence that they have located the Cube. The Supreme Intelligence orders him to retrieve it, by force. Ronan grabs his large hammer, and gathers a small squadron of soldiers, which includes Mar-Vell. On the Peak, SWORD agents go to their battle stations, but Abigail Brand tells them to wait. A small pod emerges from the Kree mothership, and flies to the Peak. Brand opens an airlock, letting the pod in. Ronan steps out from the pod, followed by his men. He demands that the humans surrender the Cosmic Cube, or perish. Brand tries to negotiate with Ronan, but, impatient, he orders his soldiers to attack. In another room, Carol is wearing a SWORD outfit, as scientist Karla Sofen runs her through a quick test of her new abilities. Carol is given a small electric shock, but she absorbs the electric energy, causing her eyes to glow yellow. She fires another energy blast at a small target, but the blast is powered up from the extra energy and it disintegrates the target completely. An alarm suddenly goes off, and several SWORD agents rush into the room, telling Carol and Karla that they need to evacuate the space station. Carol pushes her way past the agents with ease, and steps out into a corridor, where she witnesses some agents fighting against the Kree soldiers. Carol saves one of the agents, jumping in the way of a Kree laser blast, only to find the blast does no serious harm to her. Carol disarms the Kree, and takes them out with an energy blast. The other Kree catches Carol off-guard, knocking her through a wall into a laboratory. Carol and the Kree engage in a short hand to hand battle, but Carol is able to defeat the alien with ease. As the SWORD agents and the Kree do battle, Ronan makes his way over to the Cosmic Cube. Monica Rambeau stands in his way, and as Ronan raises his hammer, he is shot in the hand by a Kree ray gun. Ronan turns to see Mar-Vell, who tells Ronan that he is mad with power, and no innocent people should have to die. Ronan attacks Mar-Vell, and as the two battle, Dum Dum Dugan grabs Monica, taking her to the emergency escape pods. Monica gets into one of the pods, and Dugan tells her it's set up on an automatic course to SWORD’s on-world base. Monica launches off, as Abigail Brand throws Dugan a Kree ray gun, telling him that the captains have to go down with the ship. Carol makes her way to the center of the battle, and saves an agent from a Kree, before noticing the intense fight between Ronan and Mar-Vell. Ronan knocks Mar-Vell to the ground, and is about to kill him with his hammer, when Carol catches Ronan off-guard and knocks him back. Carol helps Mar-Vell up, and the two face off against Ronan together, overwhelming him. In the midst of the chaos, Karla makes her way to the Cosmic Cube, thinking she can stop the conflict by simply giving the aliens what they want. Karla opens the glass case, and attempts to grab the Cosmic Cube. She is instead shocked with cosmic energy, sending her flying back and putting her into a coma. Abigail Brand grabs Karla, and places her in an escape pod. Brand tells Dugan to get into one of the pods and let her handle the situation on her own. Dugan refuses. As Carol and her unlikely Kree ally work against Ronan, Carol gets too cocky, and is hit by Ronan’s hammer, knocking her into the airlock. A Kree soldier opens the airlock, causing Carol and surrounding SWORD agents to fly out into space. Carol, expecting to die, flashes back to her childhood, when her father told her of his time in Vietnam, and how when Dugan got his troop into trouble, even though they all expected to lose, they fought on anyways, and lived to tell the tale. Carol opens her eyes, and discovers she is able to survive in the vacuum of space, as well as fly. Carol rescues the agents, getting then all back onto the space station before it's too late. Carol watches in horror as Ronan kills Mar-Vell in cold blood, calling him a traitor. Ronan, strangely disheartened, walks over to his ship, and orders one of his soldiers to grab the Cube. Carol flies over, and pushes the Kree away. Carol takes the Cube, and Ronan, before flying off, tells Carol she has just started a war she cannot win. As the Kree retreat, Dugan and Brand approach Carol. Dugan is amazed at her new abilities, while Brand points out that the aliens must be plotting something big for their next attack. The three head back to Earth, with Dugan and Brand going in pods as Carol chooses to fly back herself. At the SWORD base on Earth, Carol watches over the comatose Karla in her hospital room. Abigail Brand and Monica Rambeau step into the room, telling Carol that they're going to do a few more tests to see her abilities. After a training montage, Monica deduces that the exposure to cosmic energy enhanced Carol's DNA, making her super strong and durable as well as giving her the abilities to absorb energy and release it in the form of concentrated blasts or use it to propel herself through the air, allowing flight. Sharon Ventura designs Carol a special costume that can withstand more damage and hold up in the vacuum of space, but after a series of flight tests and several different suit designs, they end up bringing in young SHIELD engineer Rick Jones to create the final costume, which Rick designs like a superhero costume. Carol doesn't like the superhero idea, but Sharon tells her that as long as it works fine to just go with it. On the Kree homeworld, the technologically advanced planet of Hala, Ronan stands alone before a large hologram of the Supreme Intelligence, who is very upset by Ronan's failure to retrieve the Cosmic Cube. Ronan proposes to the Supreme Intelligence that the Kree's scientists reactivate the Sentry program created by the ancient scientist Ruul. The Supreme Intelligence states that Ruul was a foolish man whose failures set the Kree back centuries. The Supreme Intelligence tells Ronan that he will be given one last chance to retrieve the Cube, and should he fail, he will lose his title as governor. Ronan heads to a Kree armory, where the dormant Sentry androids have been kept since their deactivation. Ronan has some scientists reactivate the androids, claiming that it is the Supreme Intelligence's orders. The gigantic battle androids rise once more, and are lined up in a special teleporter to be sent to the Cosmic Cube's location on Earth, which the Kree scientists have found via their cosmic energy tracker. On Earth, Carol finishes another flight test, and takes some time to look at a few fighter jets, reminiscing about her air force training. Monica Rambeau walks up to Carol, and reveals that, when she was younger, she was an air force pilot, too. However, a supposed close encounter of her own with a UFO made Monica want to pursue a new career in science. Carol asks Monica what they did with the Cube, and Monica says that they've taken it far away by now. Outside the base, a quartet of Kree Sentries arrive. Soldiers line up to fire at the colossal monsters, but their weapons do nothing. Dugan asks Brand if these could be from the Kree, and Brand says that these days it's hard to tell whose giant robots are whose. The Sentries wreak havoc on the base, and soldiers get into fighter jets to combat the threat from above. Carol flies into the air, helping in the battle against the Sentries. Carol is nearly struck down in battle, but she's rescued by Monica Rambeau in a fighter jet. Carol recovers, and with Monica's help, she takes out one of the Sentries by blowing up their head. Monica’s jet is hit out of the sky by a Sentry, but Carol saves her, flying her to safety. As the base is evacuated, a large fleet of Kree ships are also teleported to the scene. One of the ships, piloted by Ronan, shoots Carol out of the sky. Ronan lands down, and walks over to Carol. He tells her that he will spare her if she hands over the Cube, but Carol spits in his face. Ronan throws a punch at Carol, but she dodges it, grabs his arm, and slams him to the ground. She tells him the Cosmic Cube was taken far away as soon as it got to Earth, and Ronan claims that's impossible, as they tracked it's cosmic energy to the exact spot. Carol realizes it's her that they tracked, not the Cube. Carol is about to incapacitate Ronan, but he stops her, saying that her refusal to surrender led him to kill Mar-Vell, who was like a brother to him. Carol tells Ronan that he chose to kill Mar-Vell, and then knocks him out with a punch to the face. Carol flies into the base, where she sees Rick and Sharon taking cover. She walks past them to Abigail Brand, who is preparing for warfare. Carol tells Abigail that the Kree tracked her by mistake, and she can lead them away from the base. A Sentry smashes its way into the base, and is about to crush Carol, when Dum Dum Dugan throws himself in the way. Dugan's lower body is crushed, but he survives. Carol walks over to a fuse box, rips it open, and absorbs the electric energy from it. Her body glows with yellow light, as she flies up and unleashes a huge burst of energy upon the Sentry, destroying it. Carol then flies up into Earth's atmosphere, turning to wave farewell to her allies, if she doesn't make it back. As Carol takes off, the Kree notice the energy signal moving, and assume that Carol must have the Cube with her. The last two Sentries and the remaining Kree ships fly after Carol, out into space. They fire at Carol, but she evades their attacks. The large Kree mothership suddenly teleports in front of Carol, and she is captured. On Hala, Carol is held prisoner, and the Kree realize they've been tricked. However, Carol still intrigues the Kree. Carol is brought to face the Supreme Intelligence. The Intelligence orders that he and Carol be left alone. The others leave, and the Supreme Intelligence tells Carol the Kree's story with Earth. Millennia ago, the Earth was chosen as one of many habitable planets, not for the Kree to live on, but for them to experiment on. The Kree scientist Ruul used primitive humans to experiment with the Cosmic Cube's unique energy, known to the Kree as Terrigen. The Terrigen had different effects on each human, ranging from extremely subtle to incredibly drastic. Upon his return to Hala, Ruul tried to use the Terrigen on himself, but the accident resulted in the deaths of thousands and thousands of Kree as well as the destruction of the Kree's entire civilization. Luckily, prior to the accident, Ruul had created the Supreme Intelligence, an all-knowing artificial intelligence made in his own image to help the Kree rebuild in case of any apocalyptic event. The Supreme Intelligence now rules over the Kree, to make sure they do not repeat the fatal errors of the past. When the Cosmic Cube was discovered among ancient wreckage, two Kree were chosen to take it and hide it on a lifeless planet where it would never be found again. When they received the distress call, they feared the worst, and sent Ronan the Accuser along with Captain Mar-Vell to get it back, no matter what stands in their way. Carol tells the Supreme Intelligence that she understands, though the humans never intended to misuse it. Carol makes a deal with the Supreme Intelligence, promising to return the Cube if the Kree leave Earth alone. As she arrives back on Earth, Carol learns from Abigail Brand that the Cosmic Cube has gone missing. On Hala, the Supreme Intelligence tells the Kree that he doesn't believe Carol will return the Cube, but after seeing how dedicated Carol is to protecting her people, he now knows it is in safe hands. The Kree rejoice, and the Intelligence fades away on the monitor. A few months later, Carol meets with Nick Fury, Director of SHIELD, on the SHIELD Helicarrier, where she is rewarded with a medal of honor. Rick Jones and a wheelchair-bound Dum Dum Dugan approach Carol to congratulate her. Rick asks Carol what her superhero alias will be, and Carol, remembering the Kree soldier who died while standing up to Ronan, decides to call herself Captain Marvel. In an end-credits scene, an unseen man walks into a dark room, with another man behind him. The first man opens a suitcase, containing the Cosmic Cube. A blue light fills the room, revealing the two men as Helmut Zemo and the scarred Eric Williams. Zemo tells Eric that they've got everything they need.
