Hitaka lived in a village within the Phoenix lands. During the Clan War he became an ashigaru and guarded his village. In 1128 an oni slaughtered the small ashigaru garrison and burned the village to the ground. Hitaka was the last survivor. He joined a group of samurai and sought the demon. When they reached a nearby village they saw the tainted Master of Fire Isawa Tsuke, who had gone completely mad. The group aided the villagers to escape Tsuke's fury.
