DumSpiroSpero has described the book as "filler between BioWare's fantastic MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic and Darth Bane's time. As there is absolutely nothing canon set between 3,000 BBY and 1,500 BBY giving fanon writers an extremely fertile time period to set their work in." The novel began production on May 20, 2012, though its main character, Darth Anathemus, had been imagined by DumSpiroSpero for at least a month prior.
