  • Charles Evans Hughes (April 11, 1862 - August 27, 1948) was a Nationalist American politician and lawyer who served as Governor of New York and as President of the United States. A member of the National Party's progressive movement and a staunch opponent of the left-wing labor movement, he was referred to as the "progressive conservative." While he governed over a period of social stability and economic growth in the United States, the economy went into decline late in his term as part of the global financial turndown. One of his policy highlights was his avoidance of war with Japan for almost all of his term, until his hand was forced by the torpedo attack against the USS Rockefeller on September 14, 1924.
