The Shadows were a group of Phaedans that ruled the world of Phaedus IV. The Shadows had a black skin color. They committed, according to Robert April, genocide of the white-colored Phaedans using a large military and build-up of artillery. The organization would even slaughter children, and it was common for them to eat the non-Shadow Phaedans. April led a resistance against the Shadow organization, in violation of the Prime Directive. It was later discovered that the Shadows were secretly being backed by the Klingon Empire. (TOS - Countdown to Darkness comics: "Issue 2", "Issue 3")
