A Star in the Making! is a one-off feature on page 20 of the Knuckles Knock-Out Special, going behind the scenes to reveal parts of Knuckles the Echidna's conception. The echidna was originally designed to be as popular as Sonic the Hedgehog, but look distinctly different and unique. Japanese developers scoured the world looking for the right hair, clothing and accessories and he was soon fitted with white gloves, distinctive shoes and his neck collar.

  • A Star in the Making! is a one-off feature on page 20 of the Knuckles Knock-Out Special, going behind the scenes to reveal parts of Knuckles the Echidna's conception. The echidna was originally designed to be as popular as Sonic the Hedgehog, but look distinctly different and unique. Japanese developers scoured the world looking for the right hair, clothing and accessories and he was soon fitted with white gloves, distinctive shoes and his neck collar. The name was the next decision, with "Humphrey" deemed to be unimaginative and "Dreads" sounding too villanous. Eventually, the name Knuckles was given thanks to his spiky fists. Several designs were then shown to school children, with a pink rinse look and a curly perm both rejected. The design we see today was voted top by both the audience and the developers. The second half of the article looks into the games Knuckles has majorly featured in so far. Details are shown of how Sonic met his match in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, while the lock-on Sonic & Knuckles allowed players to utlitise Knuckles in four new games. Knuckles then got a starring role in Knuckles Chaotix, with help from the Chaotix Crew. On a closing note, Sega's lead designer noted that "Nothing was more satisfying than to have {Knuckles} turn out to be a hit!" Other sources noted that Knuckles would turn up in future games (which he did).
