Several years ago, Thurmond defended a man who shot and killed Grainy, a young Vice cop who was being brought up by James "Sonny" Crockett during a drug deal gone bad, leaving a widow and a baby. Crockett grabbed the suspect and "tuned him up", then Thurmond got the perp off on a "shaky due process rap". Later Thurmond became a friend of A.D.A. Richard Langley, and was present at his daughter's wedding when Langley and two teenage bridesmaid sisters were killed by Philippe Sagot, who was arrested for drug possession and Thurmond was his defense attorney, because he was secretly working for Sagot's boss, Jean Faber, head of a French-Canadian drug ring that was being pressured by Langley and the DEA. Faber has contributed to Thurmond's law firm for several years, but the attorney wanted out, Langley's death crossing a line, but Faber won't allow it. When stressed, Thurmond would fly his Leer jet to get away and think things out, then began to have a change of heart about Faber and sent Crockett tips on Sagot and Faber via a voice-disguised answering machine. He also had a wife, Alecia, who divorced him, but later he returned a statue that she called the divorce "deal-breaker", then left on his plane, during which the plane went down and exploded in the Atlantic, but his body was never recovered. Crockett stopped by to see his mechanic, Tommy, who was working on Thurmond's Ferrari, and found a folder of papers exposing the entire Faber operation, including affidavits, evidence, documents, etc., leading to Faber's arrest. Alecia showed Crockett the picture Thurmond left her before he took off on his flight, which was of fishing on Bimini, when Crockett found him there, he wanted Thurmond to go back to testify against Faber, but decided to leave him there, allowing him to "play dead".
