The "hopping cough" is a disease that the Smurfs caught in the cartoon show episode "Hopping Cough Smurfs". It was created by Gargamel in one of his attempts to catch and destroy the Smurfs. The disease causes whoever catches it to cough and hop with each cough. It is said to be a deadly disease, though the episode never explains how that is the case. It is most likely meant that the disease would be incurable if it is not cured before sundown. Papa Smurf says that the cure for the "hopping cough" requires penicillium mold from the Mold Mines, steam from the Demon Springs, and the tail feather of the hopping crane, which when mixed together is administered through a vaccination shot right in the behind.

In the episode, Baby Smurf was the first to catch the "hopping cough" disease. As three groups of Smurfs went to find the three ingredients for the cure to the disease, more Smurfs became infected and started hopping around, with Smurfette being carried by the winds and almost caught by Gargamel himself. After all three ingredients were gathered together, Papa Smurf administered the cure to all his little Smurfs. The name of the disease is a play on the term "whooping cough", a disease that is also known as pertussis.
