For 34 of his lifelong 48 years, Novato High's Jerry Colletto has either been coaching or playing football, among other pastimes. "I have no regrets," said the youthful-looking Physical education department chairman, who has been with the Novato Unified School District for the past 23 years. "I've enjoyed every minute of it." What makes Colletto, who still hods the San Jose State record for punt returns, 91 yards against Oregon, run in marathons, triathlons, etc., at an age when most males prefer to sit in front of a television set for their exercise?

  • For 34 of his lifelong 48 years, Novato High's Jerry Colletto has either been coaching or playing football, among other pastimes. "I have no regrets," said the youthful-looking Physical education department chairman, who has been with the Novato Unified School District for the past 23 years. "I've enjoyed every minute of it." A picture of health at 160 pounds, about 10 pounds more than when he played at San Jose State in the 1960s, Colletto has coached a wide variety of sports: football, cacrosse, track, tennis. And, when he's not coaching the physical-conditioning addict manages to keep in tip-top shape. He recently conpleted and finished the Western States 100-mile endurance race, from Squaw Valley to Auburn. What makes Colletto, who still hods the San Jose State record for punt returns, 91 yards against Oregon, run in marathons, triathlons, etc., at an age when most males prefer to sit in front of a television set for their exercise? "I just want to prove that with a proper conditioning program, once can keep partiipating in athletes. There is no need to fear injury." Preventing injuries is Colletto's bag, and he is prouder of his achievements in that area than he is of his overall coaching record. In the 18 years players have used his program, he never has had a player miss a game with a muscle-related injury. In fact, Colletto, who dabbles in yoga, sometimes is called Novato High's resident guru. "You keep reading in the sports pages about baseball, football, and baseball athletes being sidelined with muscle problems," he said. "I know I could help them with my program." His program involved stretching and breathing techniques for relaxation and concentration while competing or just exercising. "It's fairly simple to follow," he advised. "It works, not only for athletes, but for those people who only exercise." He added that it works for all ages and is especially effective for those who have lower back problems. After his father-in-law, who followed his program, bounced back from a lower back problem, Colletto was persuaded to produce this video.
