The Defence QC led Clayton Hibbs's case at his trial in October 2016 for the murder of Kylie Platt. When witness Craig Tinker was on the stand she tried to downplay what he had seen, stating that it was a normal teenage altercation and gained an admission from him that he made no effort to call the police, with Craig unable to admit to the court that he had actually taken no action as he was frozen with fear at the time.

When Gemma Winter was on the stand, she drew out of her the fact that in the fight she was knocked unconscious to the floor by Clayton, and therefore had not seen what had then occurred, inferring that Kylie had attacked Clayton and he had acted in self-defence. Gemma made a passionate defence of Kylie, saying that as a mum with two kids she would never have started a fight and was looking forward to going to Barbados, not itching to get into a brawl as the QC was trying to infer. Her words helped bring a guilty verdict against Clayton.
