Constantine was born in Constantinople; the date of his birth is unknown. He entered the service of the emperor and rose to high court offices, including holding the appointment as protovestiarios before he became proedros (president) of the Senate. He was one of the senior aides of emperors Michael V and Constantine IX. Entering a monastic life, he was appointed abbot of the imperial Mangana Monastery. After his predecessor, Michael I Cerularius, was dismissed from the throne by Emperor Isaac I Comnenus, Constantine was elected Patriarch of Constantinople in 1059. Constantine III remained in office until his repose in 1063.
