The TIE Smasher was built around the Super Heavy laser cannon. Yet, the reason it was so powerful was that each heavy laser cannon bolt was encased in a plasma field, improving its power and penetration of enemy ships, hence the "Super Heavy" name. A TIE Smasher mounted two of these Heavy Plasma Laser Cannons on its frame. Each had the power of a proton torpedo, but there was no ammunition. Thus, it could quickly expend far more power than a Bomber could. The plasma field could also allow it to get through energy shields from a ship of about corvette-size.
