Erech (Dn."Place of Terror") was the Dunael name given to the hill where Isildur Elendilion caused the King of the White Mountains to swear allegiance to him in S.A. 3320. The hill, which lay at the center of the Blackroot vale, acquired its name some years after the Oathbreaking (which took place in S.A. 3434), when the Dead began to haunt the grounds surrounding the Covenant Stone upon which Morthec Gruan's oath had been sworn. Later the Hills name was passed over to the entire surrounding Valley, known therafter as the Vale of Erech. Places of Note:

  • Erech was the name of a hill or hill-top, in Gondor situated in the far north of the province of Lamedon. In the Second Age Isildur brought with him, out of the ruin of Númenor, a three meter tall round stone. He set it on a hill in Erech, as a symbol of his lineage and Gondor. The King of the Mountains swore an oath of loyalty and to fight against the enemies of Gondor (all on the stone) when it was founded. When the time came the Men of the Mountains broke their oath and would not fight against Sauron for they had worshipped him before in the Dark Years. Isildur put a curse on them that they would never rest until they fulfilled this oath.

Later the Hills name was passed over to the entire surrounding Valley, known therafter as the Vale of Erech. Both the hill and the fields surrounding it were avoided by all, and no animals would approach it willingly. Only the Prince of Morthond, when hebore one of the Gwaedhil , had not to fear the place. In T.A. 3019, Aragorn Elessar summoned the Dead to the Stone of Erech to fulfill their-oath, after which time the hill ceased to be haunted (though the common folk still shunned it). The hill appears to have been desolate at the end of the Third Age due to the terror of the Sleepless Dead when the heir of Isildur, Aragorn, came to Erech to hold them to their oath again. This time they held true to their oath and formed the host of the Dead and helped Aragorn fight the Corsairs of Umbar at Pelargir. After the battle at Pelargir Aragorn released them from their oath and they were allowed to rest.
