Sid Barry, otherwise known as Sam Profit, is a corrupt human businessman and old friend of Beka Valentine's Father, Ignatius Valentine. He helped Ignatius build the Eureka Maru and was a very good family friend. Between the time that he left that Maru and when he sees Beka years later, he has become the head of a multi-galactic shipping and courier operation, and is pushing smaller companies out of business. He sent Beka a message asking for her to come to him, because Beka's hair had Nanobots in them that contained a recording of the slaughtered crew on the customs station. Sid just wanted to see her because he wanted to get rid of the potentially damaging message. She, however, threatens to release the footage and he lets them go. After this, he decides to run for triumvir and has to be personally transported by the Andromeda to where the election is happening, Xinti. As a result of his arrival, he runs into Beka causing things to be tough for her. During his stay he personally orders his assistant, Gretchen Rania, to fake an assassination attempt, in order to gain sympathy from the population and eliminate his rivals through a revenge fund, both of which would help him be elected as triumvir. By the time the crew of the Andromeda figure this out, he has left and is trying to escape in the Maru, although Beka is able to board the Maru. After leaving the Andromeda, the Maru is attacked and boarded by bounty hunters. Together Beka and Sid fight of the bounty hunters, but Sid is injured. At this moment Dylan and Tyr and board the Maru. He is successfully transported to Xinti but loses the election, as Dylan recorded his confession of faking his death to garner public support, which Sid made talking to Beka on board the Maru. Despite losing he is not unhappy, and thinks he got ahead of the game as many of his rivals are dead, and he himself is not committed to a political office. Before leaving he tells Beka that he loves her.
