Kirk's first five-year mission as its commanding officer, reporting to McCoy. M'Benga had interned for four years in a Vulcan ward and was educated in aspects of Vulcan medicine and physiology, such as the healing trance. (TOS: "A Private Little War", "That Which Survives", TOS novel: Death's Angel) Beginning around 2292, M'Benga was Starfleet Surgeon General.
