The Irish Internet Advisory Board was established by the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (now the Department of Justice and Equality) in February 2000, with a general responsibility to supervise a system of self-regulation by the Irish Internet service provider industry. The establishment of the Board arose from the work of the earlier Working Group on Illegal and Harmful Use of the Internet whose first report, Illegal and Harmful Use of the Internet: First Report of the Working Group, was published in 1998. The Board published several guides for parents:
