  • By Night Studios is a developer and publisher of Classic World of Darkness live-action roleplaying games under license with White Wolf. The company derives its name from the iconic "by Night" series of city sourcebooks for Vampire: The Masquerade, which began with the influential Chicago by Night in 1991. By Night's revival of the Mind's Eye Theatre brand of World of Darkness LARPs followed shortly after the success of Onyx Path Publishing's Vampire: The Masquerade 20th Anniversary Edition. Currently, their lineup includes both Mind's Eye Theatre: Vampire: The Masquerade (2013) and Mind's Eye Theatre: Werewolf: The Apocalypse (2016); further game lines are expected but have yet to be officially confirmed. The canonical status of By Night's modern World of Darkness diverges from that of Onyx Path's modern World of Darkness. In brief, the Onyx Path setting is "edition-agnostic" and presumes that the Time of Judgment simply didn't happen (or at least, didn't happen yet); in contrast, the By Night setting presumes that some version of it did happen, but the World of Darkness nevertheless managed to endure at a great cost. These changes in setting are largely derived from the influence from ongoing chronicles in larger LARP communities such as One World by Night during the time when the original World of Darkness had been discontinued in favor of the New World of Darkness.
