Roran, Carn, Mandel, Baldor, Delwin, and Hamund steal horses from a manor on their journey to Aroughs and are being pursued by guards and hunting dogs. In an attempt to evade the guards and the dogs, Roran orders his men off the road and into a gorge, where they dismount their horses and prepare to fight, leading Roran to notice that he is bleeding from blisters on the insides of his legs. Carn then uses magic to hide them from the dogs and once they are gone, the men mount up and continue to ride for Aroughs.
