  • In 2004, Cockrum became seriously ill due to complications from pneumonia and diabetes which has hampered his ability to create new comics. He passed away on November 26, 2006. He was married to Paty Cockrum, former staff member and occasional contributor to Marvel.
  • Dave Cockrum was a comic book artist who worked on a number of Star Trek comics.
  • Cockrum may best be known to the comic book world for his work on Marvel's The Uncanny X-Men, for which he designed (and therefore co-created) the popular X-Men characters Storm, Nightcrawler, and Colossus. However, he first acquired success with DC Comics, most notably as lead artist of The Legion of Super Heroes. Following a dispute, Cockrum left DC in the mid-1970s and began working for Marvel Comics. There, he helped introduce a new team of X-Men (which included Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, and Wolverine) in Giant-Size X-Men #1 in 1975 and continued drawing them in the newly revamped Uncanny X-Men, beginning with issue 94. Cockrum remained with the book until 1977, but returned for two more years in 1981.

Cockrum's influence in the comics industry continues even today, and as an homage to his contribution with the X-Men, the presidential character seen in the third film of the highly-successful X-Men trilogy (starring Patrick Stewart, Famke Janssen, and Kelsey Grammer) was named David Cockrum. Cockrum, whose comic work in recent years has been minimal due to illness, died due to complications of diabetes in 2006. He was 63 years old. The title of the last X-Men story he did before he first left the book in 1977 was "Where No X-Man Has Gone Before", an obvious allusion to the famous Star Trek quote, "...where no man has gone before."
