During her career she has received many awards including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and the Order of Military Medical Merit. Sutton graduated from Pacific Union College with a bachelor of science in business administration in 1981. She graduated from medical school at Loma Linda University and completed her internship and residency at Letterman Army Medical Center. She is also a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.
