  • Hans Brauer, when first encountered in "A Deadly Game", is a consummate espionage professional, not turning a hair or backing down in the slightest from Beckett in "the box". Mr. Brauer runs into Castle, who has picked up the deceased Roger Farraday's mission along with his self-destruct pen, at Cafe Moulin and exchanges sign and countersign with him, after Castle struck out with the French redhead who was his previous potential contact. When Castle asks an inappropriate question, Mr. Brauer assaults him, and is restrained only by Beckett's intervention with a gun. Under interrogation, he gives up nothing, warning the duo that they are in over their heads and don't want to know. So, Mr. Brauer is left to cool his heels in a holding cell. In the meantime Esposito has located "Shawn Caldwell"'s hotel room, and Beckett finds several more fake IDs there, along with a photo and identification of the target - Kofi Amandul, Minister of Banking for the Republic of Luvania. This is what finally tips the balance, as Castle realizes the nation is fake - along with everything else. The team have stumbled into the middle of a role-playing game, a 'spy-cation'. With this knowledge, they go down to holding and "break the fourth wall" with Mr. Brauer, whose confidence and poise evaporate when he understands that he is genuinely under arrest, and not in a cell with a carefully cast extra. Mr. Brauer immediately gives up the name of the company who arrange the games - Spy Ventures. "Hans Brauer" is presumably his role, but the gentleman's real name is never revealed.
