- In 2286, when an extremely advanced probe of unknown origin began vaporizing Earth's oceans and ionizing its atmosphere, Cartwright acted as the Federation President's escort in Starfleet Command, supplying him with information and status updates. Cartwright initiated a Starfleet-wide red alert, and attempted to maintain communication with Admiral Kirk aboard a stolen Klingon Bird-of-Prey, who was attempting to initiate a plan wherein he would use time travel to retrieve two humpback whales with which to respond to the probe's transmissions. In 2506 during the End War, Amon attempted to use Kaldir as a staging ground for his forces, sending shuttles through the warp conduits on the planet to reinforce his troops across the sector. Cartwright's scientists recruited allied forced to defeat the conduits and prevent Amon's forces from escaping trough them. The mission was a success, with Amon's forces repelled with few, if any, shuttles escaping.

(Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country) Kenneth Lemuel Moses Cartwright graduated from Starfleet Academy as salutatorian in 2251 and was posted to USS Enterprise during a period in which the Enterprise was transitioning between Captains Robert April and Christopher Pike. (Star Trek: Shadowstar Station) In the late 2280s, Cartwright was said to be chief of Starfleet operations as well as liaison to the Daystrom Institute. (Star Trek: Excelsior novel Forged in Fire)
