  • His All Holiness Callinicus III was Patriarch of Constantinople in the eighteenth century and has the distinction of being patriarch for less than a day. Little is known of the life of Callinicus. He was the Bishop of Heracleia with great ambitions to be patriarch. He is reputed to have used any means to become patriarch, including trying unsuccessfully many times to seize the throne. In 1757, Callinicus, in a plot with some high ranking Greek civil servants, arranged to unseat the standing Patriarch Cyril V. By bribing the Ottoman Grand Vizier Koprulu Mehmed Pasha, the group managed to get Patr. Cyril deposed and established the atmosphere for his election as Patriarch Callinicus III. His elated reaction on hearing that he had actually been elected patriarch brought on a heart attack that ended his term as patriarch to less than a day from his election.
