The USS Retribution (NCC-2017) was an Excelsior-class explorer that served in the Federation Starfleet in the 23rd and 24th centuries. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 4: Starships of the Original Series Era) Under the command of Captain Talon Crix the Retribution undertook a five-year exploration mission of the spinward sections of Federation space. In 2298, the Retribution responded to an attack on a merchant convoy by Orion pirates and drove the pirates away, saving the convoy. From 2300 to 2302, the Retribution was assigned to patrol duty along the Romulan Neutral Zone.

Three years later, it was involved in an incident that saw it destroy two Romulan birds-of-prey that were attempting to infiltrate Federation space.
