Aryabhata (Hindi: आर्यभट्ट) was India's first satellite and named after a major Gupta era (476–550 CE) Indian astronomer of the same name. India had agreed to allow the USSR to use Indian ports for tracking ships and launching vessels in return for launching future Indian satellites. It was built to conduct astrophysics experiments in X-ray astronomy, aeronomics, and solar physics. It was on of the best satellites ever launched by India.
