| - A procession of the wealthy makes its way up the nave of the cathedral in Linz. It stops at the altar, where Nicholas de Brabant is married to Alyssa von Linz by the bishop himself. It is a fairy-tale wedding. Bride and groom are both dressed entirely in white, like sugar figures off a wedding cake. The groom has the tight hose, and padded breeches and sleeves of the period, with a ruff around his neck; the bride wears a long hooded velvet cloak trimmed with fur. The pair are clearly in love, and happy with the match. Yet there is a raven in the church: to the side, away from the throng, stands LaCroix. He is dressed in black, and carries a single rosebud. Bride and groom return to a large hall in a stone-built castle or palace, with flagged floors, and a canopied bed whose posts have been twined with pink roses. Candelabra light the room, and a fire burns brightly on the hearth. The bride and groom retire to the bed, and start to make love; but, as they become aroused, Nick's eyes turn vampire gold. He stops, to Alyssa's surprise, and reminds her that he had promised that their love would be eternal. He asks her if she trusts him. The question astonishes her; and she agrees that, of course, she does. He hesitates; but her expression indicates that she encourages him to continue. So he leans forward and bites her neck, draining her blood until she is unconscious. He stays with her until she is on the point of dying, at which point he gets up in order to bite his own wrist. He collects his blood in a glass, and gives it to her to drink. It is his expectation that this process will bring her across. However, when it comes time for Nick to wake Alyssa into her new condition, he discovers that he is unable to do so. At this point, LaCroix enters the hall, and tells him that she is dead. Nick refuses at first to believe this is true, and begs him for help. But LaCroix can do nothing. He points out that he had warned Nick ahead of time that care was necessary. According to LaCroix, it had been essential that Nick not drain Alyssa completely: when a vampire who is trying to bring someone across drains too much blood, then the human simply dies, even though given vampire's blood to drink.
