Povill worked with Gene Roddenberry on the series bible for the original Phase II, and co-wrote several of the first episode scripts, including that for "The Child". The episode was adapted for the second season of Star Trek: The Next Generation in the midst of a writers' strike. The character that was impregnated was Counselor Deanna Troi.
