About: Vancouver City Senior League   Sponge Permalink

An Entity of Type : owl:Thing, within Data Space : dbkwik.org associated with source dataset(s)

This league started play in the 1911-12 season after the Patrick Brothers opened Canada's first artificial ice arena in Vancouver. While the arena was mostly for the local professional team, it had enough open dates for some amateur leagues. The league did not enjoy great popularity. It competed against major league hockey until 1926. The mild weather in Vancouver did little to increase hockey's popularity. The city was relitavely isolated from the rest of Canada so there was little competition from outside.

Then the West Kootenay League started on a streak of its own. The weakness of the Vancouver teams further reduced the league's popularity and the league went steadily downhill. It operated sporadically in the 1930's before folding in 1938.
