Canadian Fairbanks Company built the building in 1911 as a warehouse for its large machinery and mill supply business. In 1912 the name of the company changed to the Canadian Fairbanks-Morse Company. The building was designed by David Brown and Hugh Vallance of Montreal. In 1949 it served as the home to the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation.
