Robotnik used the Plasma Ray Cannon as part of a trap for Sonic the Hedgehog. The former dictator offered to meet on the Rocky Valley Zone's Sky High Peak for peace talks, but it soon became apparent that Robotnik still wanted to rule over Mobius. He revealed that he was merely a holographic projection, although the gun on the peak was real. It was then fired, completely obliterating itself and the whole top of the mountain. Fortunately, "Sonic" was also a hologram and avoided any harm.

- Having lured Sonic to the top of Sky High Peak to discuss a truce, Robotnik revealed that he had not turned up himself and was communicating by means of a holographic projection. He revealed the Plasma Ray Cannon, which the real Robotnik was operating remotely from his secret headquarters on Flickies' Island. He fired the Cannon at Sonic, obliterating the top of Sky High Peak in a massive explosion and destroying the Plasma Ray Cannon along with it. However, Sonic had expected trickery, so had also sent a holographic projection of himself instead of going personally, and thus escaped without injury.
