The Heartstone Crisis was the name given to the years 1358 - 1381 C.E, so named for the grave threat of heartstones and the detrimental effect they were having upon the world. The period was marked by the decline of magic in Esria, although it would not be felt until some years into the Crisis. Although initially simply a fear that magic would never return to the world, and a mass confusion as to the cause of such an odd disturbance, it soon became clear that the existence of heartstones suggested an imminent threat to every living being in Esria.

Although initially simply a fear that magic would never return to the world, and a mass confusion as to the cause of such an odd disturbance, it soon became clear that the existence of heartstones suggested an imminent threat to every living being in Esria. The Great Forsaking of Harbrook could be considered to be the beginning of the Heartstone Crisis, though the Archangel Netheriel was forcefully stealing souls and gathering immense amounts of power with the use of heartstones from as early as 381 A.E. The Fire Ritual of Londorwyn marked the first use of carmine energy to capture mortal souls, but concern from the Heavens would force the wicked Archangel to remain hidden for nearly a thousand years.
