Fitzgerald found he need not be concerned shortly after arrival in the Talbott Cluster and her first assigned tour through the Cluster. In early 1921 PD, Commander Fitzgerald was given temporary command of a seized Solarian freighter (Copenhagen), and used it to scout the Monica System, conducting a sensor sweep of the system using an autonomous drone. The Republic of Monica's secret military build-up was thereby confirmed and evaluated. FitzGerald was badly injured when Hexapuma's auxiliary bridge was hit during the Battle of Monica. He had to be returned to Manticore for treatment. (SI1) Upon his return to duty, he was assigned as Captain Terekhov's successor as the commanding officer of Hexapuma. (SI2) By early 1922 PD, he had been promoted to Captain. However, he never came to command the ship in action: while it was docked at HMSS Hephaestus, the station was attacked by the Mesan Alignment Navy as part of Operation Oyster Bay. Hexapuma took a graser hit in the fusion plant, and exploded, killing Captain FitzGerald and all others aboard. (HH12)
