  • A Proposed Explication of the Survival of Certain Beasts in America and Their Disappearance Hereabouts was the treatise written in the 1660s by English philosopher Samuel Pepys to outline his transformational theory of life. By the early 19th century, the book was infamous among churchmen. Conversely, it was admired by the American lawyer Alfred Douglas. Douglas found Pepys' assertions attractive because they relied on firm evidence rather than hearsay or pleading to unverifiable "authorities". In 1804, Douglas used the book to teach Jeremiah Gillen the fundamental differences between men and sims. Douglas' view on the matter had a profound effect on Gillen's life, and American society in general, when publicized in a court case that year.
