The Party's leader Arf Fey'lya played a pivotal part in the war effort, bringing the Bothans on side and aiding the Quarren in overthrowing the neutral Mon Calamari. However his influence waned when the Jedi freed politician Merix Valorum, and he supplanted Fey'lya as the political head of the Coalition. At the end of the war, the party under Fey'lya reorganised itself into a political party in order to stand at the elections to the Senate and the position of Chancellor that followed the war. Although Fey'lya's party won the most seats in the Senate, Valorum's Alliance Party was able to secure a majority with the help of the Core and Rim parties. This alliance allowed Valorum to be elected Chancellor over Fey'lya but Fey'lya still held large amounts of support in the Senate and proved an effective opposition leader to Valorum's Chancellorship. However Valorum's successful post-war policies increased his majority in the Senate and he was re-elected, but the Democratic Republicans still proved to be a strong faction in government over the next few years.
