The black tome of Alsophocus is a random artifact, a book that may be read — at the cost of incurring corruption — to learn a random spell. Or, alternately, if the player chooses not to read it, they are still incurring corruption just by virtue of proximity, since it contains the essence of Chaos and Corruption.

Desirability
| - Many an adventurer in the Drakalor Chain would direct harsh words at Alsophocus for creating the black tome.
It is one of the least desirable items conceivable, and probably the worst artifact in the game. A book that corrupts just by carrying it, that further corrupts anyone foolish enough to try to read it — it has hardly any discernible positive characteristic, but your deity may just whimsically grant it to you as a precrowning gift, rather than giving you something good like Preserver or the bracers of war.
Similarly to potions and wands of wonder, it is possible to learn Wish by reading the black tome, although even then a high number of castings is not guaranteed, so the spell may cost an obscene amount of PP.

Sources
| - Fortunately not a crowning gift for any class. But it may show up as a conspicuously terrible precrowning gift, or in a greater vault, surge of power, or as its danger level is 1, in random loot practically anywhere.
