Through a process of elimination Ben is able to whittle down the imposters. The real Meredith Smith is verified as Ace in the Hole Jones by a witness who has traveled all the way from Abilene and has seen both Cally and Jones there, Ben has no reason to believe he is the real Meredith Smith. Meredith Smith tells Ben he is the real Meredith Smith and proceeds to tell Ben things that only Ben and his lawyer Ida would know. This results in Ben congratulating him on his inheritance, who has an ulterior motive to obtain cheaper water rights from him.
