Besides Star Trek V, Carmichael's other feature film work includes second unit direction and camera work on the films Navy Seals (1990, featuring Cyril O'Reilly and Titus Welliver, with cinematography by John A. Alonzo) and Queens Logic (1991, featuring Camille Saviola) and such television shows as Baywatch. He was also a camera operator the films This Is Spinal Tap (1984, starring Ed Begley, Jr. and Michael McKean and co-written by McKean) and Paramount's The Hunt for Red October (1990, featuring Gates McFadden) and was director of photography on a number of projects, including the 1992 TV movie Double Jeopardy and the second unit of the 1996 film The First Wives Club.
