A mathematical algorithm that efficiently simulates the sound of a plucked or hammered string, originally published in 1983 by Kevin Karplus and Alexander Strong. The algorithm can produce convincing imitations of a harp, harpsichord, dulcimer, classical guitar, pizzacato violin, and similar stringed instruments. It produces a somewhat less convincing imitation of a piano. The Karplus-String algorithm is an example of physical modelling.
