Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland. It falls into four categories:
* Acute, caused by an infection, that requires immediate medical treatment
* Chronic bacterial, a rare form also caused by infection, but which is less severe than the acute form and usually manifests as recurring urinary tract infections
* Chronic pelvic pain, which accounts for over 90% of cases
* Asymptomatic, which is characterized by leukocytosis, a high white blood cell count, and is usually discovered during a routine examination.
