The weapon was put into testing in hopes it could be used against the approaching enemy fleet. Dodds turned traitor during the final testing phase to curry favor with the UED. On the date of the final test he changed the weapon's pulse-modulation frequency. This caused the awesome cannon to overload, destroying itself and the research facility that housed it.
