In 17 ABY, a Dark Jedi thief named Portoris Bol stole a cache of Sith artifacts and books from Dran Festow, a reclusive collector who lived on Umbara. Bol set out for Kothlis, unaware that he was a pawn in a much larger plan. 'Festow' did not exist as such; the cache was only partly genuine; his buyer didn't exist either; and he'd been manipulated into the theft in the first place. The whole setup was arranged by Velok and Ald Sorosel, who placed a detailed bounty for the return of the cache in hopes that Darksiders would come out of the woodwork and chase Bol across the galaxy. In the meantime, they could evaluate those Darksiders, and eliminate the ones they chose while recruiting others.

In the meantime, they could evaluate those Darksiders, and eliminate the ones they chose while recruiting others. This setup, and the events to follow, would become known as the Winnowing. Kothlis: First on the scene was the Sith Witch Ahkris, who located Bol's ship and found a single, poison-coated scroll, which she destroyed. She defeated a droid ambush set by Sorosel and spooked Bol, then suborned a group of Bothan police. She pursued him until the Dark Lord Kishkumen arrived and began a fight. Kishkumen learned the cache's underwater location and killed Bol. He was pursued by Ahkris, Bothan police, Tamzar Ranox, Ashin Varanin and Temap to an underground parking garage in Tal'Cara.
