This move was brought about by the devastation and turmoil caused by the Clone Wars, with events like Order 66 and the Great Jedi Purge and Darth Vader's Mission to Mustafar.(Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith) The Rebel Alliance renounced the Empire and fought to free the galaxy form it as one of the main issues was a strong xenophobia. The Emperor held power through the Imperial Army and the Imperial Navy, composed of Stormtroopers and Star Destroyers. The Imperial Senate used burrecracy to maintain power until it was dissolved in 0 ABY, when Palpatine attempted to use the Death Star I to keep star systems in line through fear. When the Emperor was killed in 4 ABY, Imperial forces regrouped into the Imperial Remnant under Grand Admiral Thrawn and fled to the Unknown Regions of the galaxy.
