The Human Genome Preservation Program was a secret interdisciplinary research program that ran from 2080 to 2113. It was established to prevent the impending extinction of humanity due to sterility caused by an extraterrestrial virus. HGPP ended in 2113, when it was succeeded by the PASIPHAE Project which aims to explore the opportunities presented by this new phase in human evolution.

  • The Human Genome Preservation Program was a secret interdisciplinary research program that ran from 2080 to 2113. It was established to prevent the impending extinction of humanity due to sterility caused by an extraterrestrial virus. In 2076, an extraterrestrial virus was brought back to Earth. Influenced by the planets ecosystem and remaining radioactive hotspots from recent global hostilities, the virus mutated causing it to affect the human reproductive system. Since no other symptoms are associated with the virus, the initial spread of the infection went largely unnoticed. When it became clear that the XY virus had the potential to become a global pandemic, an interdisciplinary task force was established in 2080 to prevent its further spread and possibly find a countermeasure for the growing sterility of the human population. One of the first measures was to establish isolated colonies of healthy humans on newly discovered inhabitable planets. Apart from that, all efforts to stifle the spread of sterility failed until in 2107 a research team discovered feral life-forms on the distant Planet OWL-42g which exhibit a highly adaptive reproductive system. In 2113 their so called hyperseeder ability could eventually be developed into a gene-therapy that not only restores fertility but makes humans compatible for sexual reproduction with almost any species. HGPP ended in 2113, when it was succeeded by the PASIPHAE Project which aims to explore the opportunities presented by this new phase in human evolution.
